With a spotlight on Montana, the chart above displays the distribution of the net percent change of population across the nation's 51 states over the period 2000-2020.
Those states whose population growth registered above the nationwide average over this period realized an increase in their nationwide share of population. Likewise, those states whose population growth registered below the nationwide average experienced a decline in their relative share of population nationwide.
Nationwide Snippets:
  • Over 2000-2020 population grew in fifty U.S. states while declining in one.
  • Population growth in nineteen states outpaced the nationwide average (17.49%), while growth in thirty-two states trailed.
  • At the extremes of the distribution, Nevada posted the highest growth of population (54.26%), while West Virginia placed last by logging a -0.95% decline.
  • The spread in population growth between the highest (Nevada, 54.26%) and lowest (West Virginia, -0.95%) over 2000-2020 equated to 55.21% ( = 54.26%-0.95%).
  • Population growth nationwide is but a weighted metric that stems from each state's share of population nationwide. On this point, as the largest state in the nation, California's net population growth over 2000-2020 of 5,511,761 made up 11.17% of the total net growth nationwide (49,338,669):
